* jet 이란?

The name physicists give to a cluster of particles emerging from a collision or decay event all traveling in roughly the same direction and carrying a significant fraction of the energy in the event. * 어떻게 jet을 background로부터 구분해 낼 수 있을까?

The study of (mini-)jets in Heavy Ion Reations at RHIC is complicated by large non-jet contributions. Such contributions can serve as a "background" which masks the jet signal.
The clustering of the decay products of jets in phase space can give rise to relatively strong angular correlations between jet-particles. Consequently, a multiparticle correlation analysis could enhance a possible jet signal over the "background". Such an analysis provides an excellent means for distinguishing between correlations that result from jet topologies and those that result from flow.
